A Look at the Impressive Volvo All-Wheel Drive System in the Volvo XC40
December 15 2022,
The Volvo XC40 is a very safe and capable sub-compact SUV, notably because of its advanced all-wheel-drive system that works to always maintain a high level of grip, even when driving on snow, ice, or mud.
The basic design
The Volvo XC40 uses an all-wheel drive system that provides a great balance between traction and fuel efficiency. To do so, this system sends power primarily to the front wheels, but as soon as slippage is detected a center coupling is engaged and the rear axle can receive up to 50% of the engine’s torque. This makes for a smooth and responsive system that is present when needed, but not intrusive when the conditions don’t require its help.
How it behaves
In order to make the most of the benefits of having an AWD system, Volvo programmed the unit found in the XC40 to engage at certain times when traction is anticipated to be reduced. For example, every time the vehicle is stopped, the rear axle is engaged in order to provide traction to all four wheels as soon as the driver presses the accelerator, which helps avoid spinning the tires when a sharp acceleration is needed. In addition, selecting the off-road drive mode provided a constant link between the engine and the rear axle in order to help the XC40 conquer more difficult obstacles such as large snow banks or deep ruts.
What are the benefits?
The AWD system used in the Volvo XC40 improves the vehicle’s capabilities by giving it more traction on slippery roads, thus allowing it to bring its driver and passengers wherever they need to go safely, even when the road conditions are not favourable. In addition, this system provides a higher level of stability when driving at higher speeds such as on the highway, which gives drivers more confidence and creates an even safer and more enjoyable driving experience during high winds, heavy rain, or prolonged snowfalls.
