January 04 2022,
Living in our cold climate bears its own set of challenges and one of the most daunting is mastering winter driving conditions. With a bit of preparation and a few helpful guidelines, you will remain safe on the roads this winter and navigate extreme conditions like a pro.
Whether tackling the everyday tasks of navigating the snow or taking on more difficult challenges, follow these tips to help make your winter driving experience safer, more confident and comfortable.
- Keep your vehicle in a garage if possible. Avoid ice damage and keep it warmer by keeping it protected and inside.
- Car batteries weaken in the cold. To save your battery, avoid plugging in electronics (like your smartphone)
- Keep your fuel tank as full as possible - in case you need to pull over or are stranded somewhere due to emergency circumstances.
- Keep an emergency kit in your car, with a shovel, blanket, ice scraper, flashlight, jumper cables, candle, and matches.
- Top-up your antifreeze.
- Check tire pressures. Cold temperatures reduce the volume of air in tires and may require levels to be increased.
- Avoid driving unless you absolutely need to venture out. When you do, drive slowly and use extra caution.
- When venturing out on very cold days, warm up your vehicle for at least 15 minutes.
Our harsh climate creates a multitude of challenges for vehicles. By following these simple guidelines, you and your vehicle can weather the season with ease.
