Electric Volvo Car Drivers Gain Access to Tesla Superchargers Across Canada
July 25 2023,
Volvo Cars, as part of its transition towards becoming an all-electric car maker by 2030, has inked an agreement with Tesla. This partnership renders Volvo the first European car maker to collaborate with Tesla, offering both current and future electric Volvo car drivers access to Tesla’s extensive Supercharger network across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
This deal will add 12,000 new fast-charge points to the existing charging infrastructure accessible to Volvo drivers, providing a considerable boost in charging convenience. As Tesla pushes to augment its Supercharger network in these regions, these figures are expected to rise. Volvo Cars CEO, Jim Rowan, comments that the agreement alleviates a major barrier to increased electric driving – access to straightforward and convenient charging infrastructure. This action symbolizes a considerable stride in making transport more sustainable by enabling more people to shift to electric vehicles.
Under the terms of the agreement, all Volvo cars from 2025 onwards will be outfitted with the North American Charging Standard (NACS) charging port in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Furthermore, drivers who prefer to continue using the Combined Charging System (CCS) of chargers will have the option to do so, thanks to an adapter provided by Volvo Cars.
Existing Volvo Cars drivers, operating vehicles from the current electric line-up, including the XC40, C40 Recharge, and the newly unveiled EX30 and EX90, will have the capability to find charging locations via the Volvo Cars app. It is expected that these drivers will be able to utilize the Supercharger network through an adapter by the first half of 2024.
Lastly, the Volvo Cars app will allow electric Volvo drivers in the United States and Canada to identify public charging stations, receive real-time information on charger availability, and pay for charging sessions through a singular interface, making the process of charging a Volvo vehicle straightforward and user-friendly.
